May May
Amy “May May” Yaeger, born in Santa Cruz California, 1985, has centered her life around art from a young age. From comic books to found sculpture, she busied herself with all things creative as a child, until she discovered painting in early 1998. She developed skill in oil, acrylic and airbrush with the help of Myron Stephens, a local artist in the Sacramento area.
May May had her first gallery opening when she was 14 at Starbucks, and her second at the local library, but soon found herself showing in more prestigious galleries, including the Crocker Art Museum of Sacramento in 2003. She also won several competitions including “When Art Gets Wired”, an independently funded wire sculpture competition at Folsom High in 2002.
She made extra money during summer months doing commissioned charcoal portraits, and large-scale murals for children’s bedrooms. She also had a small side business teaching ceramics and small crafts at children’s birthday parties.
In July of 2001 she submitted her portfolio, and, upon recieving a government grant, attended the California State Summer School of the Arts. The majority of her formal art training was obtained here, where she spent a month living in the dorms at CalArts, learning technique from some of the best art professors around the country.
May May graduated at the top of her class in 2003, with honors in the Fine Arts.
She moved to Phoenix a month later, with dreams of going to the Art Institute for graphic design. Apparently that shit is expensive, because she didn’t go. She decided to persue a bigger dream… Amy had met two very notable local tattoo artists in Arizona, Bob Sims, and Karyn Pratt, owners of Lucky Draw Tattoo in Glendale. She was amazed at the delicately detailed images created by Karyn, and the big, bold Japanese done by Bob. It was impossible not to be inspired. She quickly started painting and drawing with new-found furor and purpose; she was going to learn to tattoo.
Unfortunately, an un-lucky draw of the cards would keep Amy from ever tattooing for Bob Sims. He passed away January 2nd, 2005, and is sorely missed. She started her apprenticeship exactly a year later to the day, at Sacred Skin Tattoo in Phoenix.
She now makes her home at Stay True Tattoo, where she continues with things creative. May May specializes in custom tattoos designs, ranging from Japanese to Realism to New School and beyond. Tattooing professionally for two years, she is an expert at bringing your vision to life!
